Days of Christmas past: Linked in with neat York County history stuff, Dec. 18, 2011

This photograph brings back memories of all sorts. The Christmas of old. Orphans and other disadvantaged children this time of year. And the old Children’s Home of York, at Pine and East Philadelphia, now a shopping center. Here, the children and staff of the home pose on its front steps in Christmas 1923.  York County residents share their Christmas thoughts, photographs at holiday memories. Also of interest: Santa’s seat at York’s old Bon-Ton: ‘Think of the hundreds … that sat on Santa’s lap on the chair’ and Moravian Christmases past, present and to come: Beautiful First Moravian Church in York and Der Belsnickel of the Pennsylvania Dutch: ‘He looked scary and carried a sack of presents’.

Neat stuff from all over … .

The York Daily Record/Sunday News has started a website, or blogsite, where you can:

  • View and comment on our daily story lineup – before the newspaper is published.
  • Enjoy a Twitter exchange between a YDR editor and actress Alyssa Milano (Remember “Who’s the Boss?”).
  • Understand why Monday’s newspaper will be slightly narrower, but still have as many stories and photographs as before. We call that site YDR Insider, and it’s meant to, well, give you a look inside our newsroom. We see this website – with its information about our people, news decisions and coverage plans – as an opportunity to build trust and community and understanding. To make this work best, it’s essential that you weigh in, even disagree, with comments about what you read on YDR Insider.

Here’s one post that brings together these ideas and adds another essential element of life in our newsroom – it’s fun:

“Stephanie Reighart officially got her desk name plate this week, with a ceremonial passing of it to her after a staff meeting held by the Night News and Digital crew. Stephanie started here back in September, and it takes a few months to earn the plate. The first thing she checked, of course, was to make sure her name was spelled correctly. She learned fast.”

Story of note: YDR sports tells a story about a longtime York countian who had a shot at the National Basketball Association but turned it down.

Another rail trail? Hamilton Township and East Berlin in western Adams County are studying the possibility of a hiking trail to connect the two municipalities.

New home: The Littlestown Historical Society is crossing the street to its new home.

Blog post of the day: Scott Mingus catches us up on the status of a memorable building in the post: National Park Service discusses status of old Cyclorama Building in Gettysburg.

Forum of the day: Check out this interactive map of about 10 Christmas decoration displays around York County.
