From petroglyphs to bald eagles, Dan Meckley covers ‘Incomparable York County’

York, Pa.’s, Daniel G. Meckley III has compiled several volumes of family histories combined with York County histories. Or vice versa. The 90-year-old former CEO has published another volume in that series, ‘York, The Incomparable York County, PA,’ and it covers an array of county topics. Dan Meckley’s many written words about life in York County and his own family’s history reminds one of Jere Carl’s scrapbooks.

Like Carl’s often-referenced collections of 100 years ago, Dan’s volumes are full of rich, sometimes random, information. The randomness allows you to move through his volumes, such as his recent “York, The Incomparable York County,” with a sense of expectation – a feeling of serendipity.

The subhead of the work suggests the broad ground it covers: “… from Petroglyphs to POW Camps to Atomic Power to Wild Turkeys to Home of Bald Eagles.”

That heading also suggests the length and breadth of Dan’s interests.

I had the privilege of  editing this 568-page work, artfully designed and printed by NeFra Communication Center in York. As I was going through the pages, I would often stop the editing and just enjoy the content – that neat sense of serendipity taking hold.

Let’s just call Dan’s labor of love a work of well-done York countiana.

This volume and Dan’s other works, mostly privately circulated, are available to read at the York County Heritage Trust’s Archives.

Near Jere Carl’s scrapbooks, I might add.

Two examples of pieces from Dan’s most recent work follow:

A section of ‘York: The Incomparable York County, Pa.’ deals with town characters, such as goldfish eater, Sam Copenheaver. The newspaper article even labels him as a ‘town character.’

Outdoor life in York County and beyond is found on many pages in Dan Meckley’s work. Here, he tells about Ed Shaub: ‘Ed is the quintessential York Co. outdoorsman.’ His piece on Ed precedes a section about snapping turtles.
