Where exactly are those underground comfort stations on York, Pa.’s Continental Square?

Some folks, aware of the underground comfort stations in York, Pa.’s, Continental Square, are nonetheless not sure where these men’s and women’s facilities sit. Well, the former planter that has caused the roof problems below marks the spot. The York Daily Record/Sunday News photo shows the circular planter’s footprint. The damage caused from the planters above. Some folks are asking good questions about the facilities. Who would take a shower – or a bath – down there. One set of users would be people passing through who didn’t need – or couldn’t afford – hotel rooms. Also of interest: Prohibition forced the drinking of alcohol – and York’s comfort stations – underground.

Of course, you can locate the comfort stations by looking for stairs at Continental Square’s southeastern corner. Also of interest: For decades, York’s comfort stations spelled relief.
