Playing through … a York County snowstorm at Springwood Golf Club

York County, Pa., has a lot of golf courses – we once experimented with the ‘America’s First Capital of Golf’ slogan – and York countians love their golf. And this 2011 scene of golfing in a snowstorm on the Springwood Golf Club proves both points. Not surprisingly, the golfers had a bit of a problem finding the ball after a drive and putting was a little difficult. We bring back this snowy scene as summer approaches to promote its sale as part of a ‘Local Lens’ fundraiser on June 6 to benefit Olivia’s House. The York Daily Record and Evening Sun of Hanover staff have put up numerous such iconic York County scenes for sale as part of a fundraiser.  See a gallery of the photos: YDR MediaCenter.  (See additional snow photo below.) More neat stuff from all over … .

This is a little different.

It’s a York Daily Record story about the skull of a Civil War soldier that will go to auction this week.

This one provides food for thought.

Still on the topic of Wheels of York

Cliff Satterthwaite created art for all kinds of reasons, including the most utilitarian purposes. Here is a placemat design showing vehicles makers in York County in the first 20 years of the 20th century. The six-wheel auto, the Pullman, upper left, didn’t catch on. When the middle wheels hit a high spot, the vehicle tended to seesaw. For more, check out: Pullman.
