Williams Grove Speedway’s 75th birthday year: 6 links capture a big racing weekend

Spring Grove’s Greg Hodnett captured fifth place in the Dash race this weekend at Williams Grove Speedway. The weekend brought together The World of Outlaws and the Pennsylvania Posse at Williams Grove Speedway, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2014. The YDR’s Chris Dunn captured this classic American scene suitable for Norman Rockwell, a speeding car, dirt track and attentive audience.

7 images illustrate York County’s love affair with its cars

By now, YorkTownSquare.com readers know my interest in the Bowling Green Speedway and York County, Pa.’s, love affair with all things with two or four wheels. That love affair line comes from the York Daily Record’s former editor Dennis Hetzel. The BG Speedway clearly illustrates this relationship. In the middle of remote York County countryside, the speedway drew up to 8,000 fans and 130 cars, according to a recent YDR story about the racetrack revisited at a Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society meeting. The race track didn’t make it out of the mid-1950s, but a marker along Shaffer Church Road remembers its operation.

Old York County dirt track brought sounds of revving engines, cheering fans to middle of no where

The long-abandoned Bowling Green Speedway’s oval is visible today from the air in this Google Map. This bird’s-eye view shows the rural nature of the old track. Noise from the racing cars and fans broke the peace of this rural area on race nights. Fans of the speedway and Glen Rock-area history will learn about that old dirt track at a Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society meeting this week.

Bowling Green Speedway illustrates York County’s love affair with its cars

York County’s old Bowling Green Raceway will be remembered in an upcoming Glen Rock Historical Society program. The rural raceway is remembered by many as an attraction drawing thousands to rural York County 60 years ago. Joe Heisler will present.
