Coffee soup, Fastnachts and other York County, Pa., dishes

Coffee soup was on the menu for breakfast at homes on York, Pa.’s, Codorus Street 60 years ago. Former residents told of their fare of coffee soup at a recent panel discussing life of this west end street. That neighborhood, courtesy of eminent domain, is now Martin Luther King Jr. park.

York, Pa.’s Codorus Street neighborhood is seen in this page from a book from a past reunion. Former residents of the neighborhood have been meeting annually in reunions and plan to do so again this year.

Their York, Pa., neighborhoods long gone, former Freys Avenue and Codorus Street residents plan for joint reunion

This scene captured the old Freys Avenue neighborhood in York, Pa., about a dozen years after York County Housing Authority high rise apartments went up. According to the York Daily Record, this scene from June 1972 shows old paving on East King Street that ‘goes between halves of the Freys Avenue housing project.’ Former residents of the Freys Avenue area and those from another former neighborhood on Codorus Street are looking to hold a joint reunion in 2014.
