From the Gettysburg battlefield: Cavalryman’s sword bears initials C.J.H.

York, Pa.’s, Dick Wilson has a sword which has been in his family for years. Family lore has it coming from the battlefield in Gettysburg. He believes it to be a cavalryman’s sword and the initials appear to be C.J.H. If he could find a descendant of the swordsman, ‘I’d give him the sword.’

Gettysburg 150: 5 last best bets in photos, videos and the written word

This re-enactment, the second of two at Gettysburg 150, ended with Pickett’s Charge on Sunday. It was one of 10 photos capturing the re-enactment scenes appearing on ydr.com’s Media Center. Such art brought the following from Kate Currier Perkins on ydr.com’s Facebook page: ‘Nice pics!’ Yes, indeed.

Here was the FB question: “Re-enactor Patrick McCarthy gets down on one knee as he asks his girlfriend Anna Jennings to marry him at the Gettysburg 150th celebration today. Wanna guess what she said?”

Gettysburg’s Shriver House sponsored an Abe Lincoln lookalike contest, and four-year-old Koen Thomas showed up. He made an impression. The Lincoln salute was among numerous Gettysburg 150 activities and observances on Day 3, highlighted by a civilians march from Seminary Ridge to Cemetery Ridge.

Gettysburg 150: Check out these 5 memorable photo, video, story links

Pickett’s Charge came a few days earlier than its anniversary in this 150th weekend re-enactment in Gettysburg. The charge, sometimes called Longstreet’s Assault, took place 150 years ago today. Jason Plotkin’s aerial photograph of the Blue Gray Alliance captured action on the Bushey Farm. The cannonade before the charge created interesting smoke patterns from the aerial, Plotkin wrote.

York, Pa., Daily Record photographer Jason Plotkin captured this photo of Gettysburg 150’s first weekend of re-enactments. Plotkin said he found the re-enactor in this photo particularly in to it, full of personality. Another full weekend of re-enactment in southcentral Pennsylvania is approaching.

Gettysburg 150: York County crawled with Copperheads in the Civil War

Ron Maxwell is known to southcentral Pennsylvania film and Civil War aficionados as the man behind ‘Gettysburg,’ and ‘Gods and Generals.’ He directed the film “Copperhead,” which premiered in Gettysburg last week as part of Gettysburg 150.

Two Texans, re-enactors with the Confederate Red River Battalion, are part of those arriving in Gettysburg, Pa., for this weekends re-enactment, one of two planned as part of Gettysburg 150. The re-enactment is one of a slew of activities in southcentral Pennsylvania this weekend in the buildup to observances next week of Gettysburg 150. Gettysburg 150: When Civil War generals needed info, they’d pick up a newspaper

Civil War generals would often acquire copies of newspapers published in the areas through which they were moving to add their repository of information. This is such a map showing Harrisburg at the time of the Confederate Gettysburg campaign. If Confederate Gen. Dick Ewell had secured this copy, he would have been well-briefed about the state capital he was fronting.
