Fighting in cramped World War II aircraft like those at York Airport? ‘I just couldn’t imagine.’

The Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour landed at Thomasville’s York Airport this week, stayed ‘a while’ and then flew away leaving some visitors marveling. Special Olympian Loretta Claiborne at 60: Who’s writing her biography?

Loretta Claiborne might be the best-known Special Olympian in the world, as the York, Pa., Daily Record/Sunday News described in a recent story. Disney put out a made-for-TV movie on his life, ‘The Loretta Claiborne Story.’ She is part of a cadre of Special Olympians featured in a National Portrait Gallery painting. And she’s been profiled in an inspirational/instructional booklet, ‘In her stride.’ And she’s conditioning and training at 60 years of age. Now all that remains is for someone to write a serious biography about Claiborne. Or a master’s thesis. Here she runs on South Duke Street after working out at nearby Crispus Attucks Community Center.

York, Pa.’s Loretta Claiborne about friend Eunice Shriver: ‘She could have gone anywhere, but she wanted to help humanity’

York, Pa.’s Loretta Claiborne joins other Special Olympians and Eunice Kennedy Shriver in this portrait hanging in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. From left are Airika Straka, Katie Meade, Andy Leonard, Claiborne, Shriver and Marty Sheets. According to the York Daily Record/Sunday News, this was the first portrait commissioned by the museum that was not of a person who had served as president or first lady.
