York County, Pa., readers rank places and buildings on YorkTownSquare.com’s Top 10 list for 2014

This Hanover-area porch has been well-used over the years. It’s part of the Gitt Mansion, now a library and wedding venue on Hershey Hill outside Hanover. This is the former home of York, Pa., Gazette and Daily owner J.W. Gitt. His library, focusing on the Cold War era, is largely intact. His papers are also available for scholars to review. A YorkTownSquare story about the mansion – You can look down and see the town laid down before you – scored No. 6 in the top 10 list of posts on the the blog in 2014.

Les Stark, a marijuana activist in Pennsylvania, believes this photograph shows an old hemp mill. Mark Walters of The Evening Sun in Hanover is seeking more information on this mill, originally published in this YorkTownSquare spread about the Colonial Valley Mill in Menges Mills. The sellers of the Heidelberg Township mill, now under new ownership, believed this was part of the Colonial Valley operation

Seven Gates of Hell and Toad Road: Film scares the fun out of York County’s most popular urban legend

York, Pa., Daily Record/Sunday News columnist Mike Argento has written several times about the urban legend which places the Seven Gates of Hell on Toad Road in Hellam Township. The recent release of the film ‘Toad Road’ gave him another opportunity.

Seven Gates of Hell and Toad Road, Part III: A history mystery of mythical proportions

The movie ‘Toad Road’ just recently made it back into the news because it’s now available on DVD. That news might not have shaken the world, but York countians noticed after that bit of news was posted on YDR’s Facebook page. (See below). That’s news in York County, Pa., because the Toad Road film draws from a mythical place in a rural area of eastern York County associated with the Seven Gates of Hell, an urban legend oversized for even that species of tall tales.
