Shrewsbury: Home to well-known people, but transportation has defined the town – The boroughs of York County series, No. 12

This historical marker observes one of Shrewsbury, Pa,’s luminaries – Amanda Berry Smith. Another well-known 20th-century figure, humanitarian Spurgeon Keeny, came from this southern York County borough. And now, efforts are underway to observe another native son who made it big on the world stage – actor Cameron Mitchell.

Bryan Sellers provided these artifacts about the life and times of famed Hollywood star Cameron Mitchell at January’s Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society meeting. This week, he’ll be back to tell about plans to permanently honor Mitchell in York County, his home county.

Cameron Mitchell: Call goes out for historical marker, scholarship to honor York County’s ‘Uncle Buck’

This photograph of Cameron Mitchell was part of the collection on display in a Glen Rock Historical Preservation Society-sponsored evening this week. York County resident Bryan Sellers, whose uncle managed some of the noted Hollywood actor’s affairs, presented about the York native and brought the collection for about 100 people attending to see.

4 photos give picture of Hollywood star Cameron Mitchell’s ties to York County

Hollywood TV/Movie star Cameron Mitchell, right, a York, Pa., native is seen with his sister, Katherine and brother, Carlisle, on a visit to his home county in the 1960s. The Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society is sponsoring a program about Cameron Mitchell at 7:30 p.m. today. The venue has been moved from the society’s museum in the Peoples Bank building to to Trinity United Church of Christ on Manchester Street.

Shrewsbury’s Amanda Berry Smith: ‘Our house was one of the main stations of the Under Ground Railroad’

Amanda Berry Smith was a renaissance woman. She grew up in York County, Pa., and as an adult, she served as an evangelist. She’s remembered as a chronicler of the Underground Railroad movement in northern Maryland and York County.
