These old York County steps, Part 6: Where did they lead?

These Springettsbury Township, Pa., steps don’t make sense. Why would someone want to walk from one fast-food place – Wendy’s – to another, Arby’s, both the the 2700 block of Route 462. So they must be left over from another time.

New word here: spionnetje, Part 3. And they were once all around York, Pa.

Some months ago, Tom Gibson alerted us to the presence today of busybody mirrors, also called spionnetje, that were staples on building around York, Pa., decades ago. We found one on West Market Street near Union Lutheran Church. Just yesterday, Tom pointed out that one was posted on a building on East Market Street. So the hunt was on, and wouldn’t you know it? I’ve walked by this mirror, at 262 E. Market, scores of times on my way to the York County Heritage Trust, at 250 E. Market.

Recent YorkTownSquare.com posts about busybody mirror or mirrors (called spionnetje) on the side of York, Pa., buildings have raised great interest among readers. So we thought we’d bring back this vestige from the past, a long overlooked sign across from the East Market Street parking garage. It’s there, probably from the beginning, when the parking garage opened in 1969, with the promise that it would draw shoppers to plenty of parking in the downtown.

So we put out a call on this blog at in the York Daily Record for the present of busybody mirrors, aka ‘spionnetje.’ And a Facebooker gave us a lead to this one, just west of Union Lutheran Church on West Market Street. That’s the only one to be brought forth so far. Any other such mirrors out there?

York County’s Tom Gibson recalls this spionnetje or spying mirrors was mounted on the south side of York’s East Market Street, maybe the 300 or 400 block. He captured this scene about three or four years ago and doesn’t know if it’s still there.
